Wat Tham Saeng Phet (วัดถ้ำแสงเพชร) is a significant and beautiful temple located in Amnat Charoen province. It is a well-known destination for both religious pilgrims and tourists due to its unique features and serene natural surroundings.
Key Highlights and Attractions
The Cave (Tham Saeng Phet): The temple's name, "Tham Saeng Phet," means "diamond light cave." This comes from the cave's interior, where the rock formations sparkle and glitter like diamonds when they catch the light. The cave itself is a large space that houses a revered Buddha image.
The Reclining Buddha Image: One of the most prominent features of the temple is the large and beautiful reclining Buddha, known as Phra Phuttha Photthiyan Phatthra Maha Rat (พระพุทธโพธิญาณภัทรมหาราช). This statue is revered and is believed to have been built according to the specific artistic descriptions of Prince Damrong Rajanubhab.
The Golden Pagoda (Chedi): A striking golden pagoda stands out on the hilltop. It is a key landmark of the temple and a site for worship.
Wooden Vihara: The temple also features a unique, low-rise, and open-air wooden vihara (chapel) that has a design reminiscent of northern Thai architecture. Inside, there is a small, white main Buddha image called Phra Phuttha Metta Rattana Thammarangsi (พระพุทธเมตตารัตนธรรมรังษี).
Natural Surroundings: Wat Tham Saeng Phet is situated on a large sandstone plain on a mountaintop, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The entrance to the temple features a tranquil bamboo tunnel, which adds to the peaceful and natural atmosphere.
Meditation Center: The temple is also known as a meditation practice center in the tradition of Phra Achan Cha Suphattho (Luang Pu Chah), a highly respected monk.
