King Mengrai Monument | Chiang Rai Province
Located at Phokhun Intersection, this monument was erected to commemorate the glory of King Mengrai. The bronze statue depicts him in the attire of an ancient Lanna king, standing on a base approximately 3 meters high. He holds a sword in his left hand, resting on his lap, and wears a garland and a ring.
King Mengrai was the 25th king of the Luang Changkrach dynasty. He was the son of Phaya Lao Meng and Queen Thep Khamkhai (or Queen Ua Ming Chom Mueang). He was born in 1782 and passed away in Chiang Mai in 1854.
He founded the city of Chiang Rai on Doi Thong, building upon the foundations of an earlier city, in 1805.
He ruled the city, leading to its flourishing as the Lanna Kingdom.
